What Vastu Shanti actually addresses
Vastu Shanti is not a correction of your floor plan. It is a ceremony of reconciliation: the act of building disturbs the ground and the elements, and the puja formally makes peace with the space and the directions before it is occupied. This matters in practice because it means a home with imperfect Vastu is not disqualified — which describes almost every Mumbai flat, where layouts are decided by the builder and the plot, not by the shastra.
That is worth saying plainly. Families are routinely told their flat has a "Vastu dosh" and sold expensive structural remedies. A Vastu Shanti puja is the traditional and proportionate response.
When it is performed
- At Griha Pravesh — the most common context, as part of the housewarming ceremony.
- After renovation — particularly where walls, the kitchen or the puja space have moved.
- For a new office, shop or clinic — before the first day of business.
- When a space feels unsettled — after prolonged illness, disputes or a run of difficulty in the household.
- Before selling or letting — less common, but traditional in some families.

Commercial Vastu Shanti is common in Mumbai and usually scheduled early morning before staff arrive, or on a Sunday. The ritual is the same; what changes is the practicalities — building fire rules frequently prohibit a havan in commercial premises, in which case we perform a lamp-based ceremony, which is an accepted alternative.
