The goddess Mumbai is named after
Mumba Devi is the guardian goddess of the Koli fisherfolk — the original inhabitants of the seven islands that became Mumbai. The city's very name joins Mumba with Aai, "mother" in Marathi. Her temple, standing at Bhuleshwar near Zaveri Bazaar for centuries, remains one of the city's most visited shrines: traders pray to her before opening their books, families before every new beginning.
Why you've never seen her murti in a shop
Walk into any murti shop and you will find Lakshmi, Ganesha and Krishna in a hundred forms — but not Mumba Devi. As a regional deity worshipped principally at one temple, the big manufacturers in Jaipur and Moradabad never sculpted her. Devotion to Mumba Devi lived at the temple, and only there.
We are a Mumbai workshop. Our founders grew up with her name in the city's name. So our artisans studied the sanctum and sculpted it — not just the goddess, but her twin-dome temple, with Shree Mumba Devi enshrined beside Jagdamba Devi and Annapurna Devi, the way devotees actually see her in darshan.
