What happens during a Griha Pravesh puja?
The ceremony settles a new home before it is lived in. A typical Griha Pravesh at a Mumbai flat runs two to three hours and follows this order:

When should Griha Pravesh be done?
On an auspicious muhurat, and ideally before the family moves in and sleeps in the home for the first time. Muhurat depends on the tithi, nakshatra and your family tradition, so we confirm a date and time window with you rather than handing you a generic calendar. Some months — notably during Chaturmas and Pitru Paksha — are traditionally avoided for Griha Pravesh; if your possession date falls there, tell us and we will advise on the accepted alternatives.
Mumbai adds a practical constraint most guides ignore: possession dates slip, society NOC and lift bookings take time, and a 6 am muhurat in a high-rise needs the lift booked the night before. We plan around that with you.
What you need to arrange
- Access to the flat from at least an hour before the muhurat.
- Water and a working gas connection for the milk boiling, if possible.
- Society permission for a havan — most Mumbai societies allow it, but a few restrict open fire. Tell us in advance and we will adapt the ritual.
- The samagri — or let us bring it. We send a full list either way.
- A murti for the new mandir, if you do not already have one. Many families install their first murti at Griha Pravesh; our gifting page covers what suits a first mandir.
Griha Pravesh in a rented flat or an old home
Both are common and both are fine. For a rented flat, a shortened Vastu Shanti and mandir sthapana is usual — a full havan is often impractical and not expected. For a home you are re-entering after major renovation, the traditional term is Dwar Pravesh or a repeat Vastu Shanti; the ceremony is similar but shorter. Tell us which situation you are in and we will suggest the right scope rather than upselling the largest one.
