What is Satyanarayan Puja?
A worship of Lord Vishnu in his Satyanarayan form — the lord of truth. It is among the most performed household ceremonies in India precisely because it asks so little: no elaborate prerequisites, no fixed caste or community custom, and it can be done in a flat with the family sitting around the pujari.
Families in Mumbai typically hold it after a promise or vow is fulfilled (a new job, a recovery, a birth), at a housewarming alongside Griha Pravesh, before a wedding, or simply on a Purnima as an annual family observance.
The five chapters of the katha
The heart of the ceremony is the katha — five short chapters, each a story about what happens when a promise to perform the puja is kept or broken. The pujari reads them aloud while the family listens; this is the part that takes the longest and the part most worth understanding.
- Adhyay 1 — Narada asks Vishnu how human suffering can be relieved; the puja is described.
- Adhyay 2 — A poor brahmin and a woodcutter prosper after performing it.
- Adhyay 3 — A merchant forgets his vow, and his fortunes turn.
- Adhyay 4 — The merchant's family suffers until the vow is remembered.
- Adhyay 5 — A king dismisses the prasad and loses everything, then is restored.
The prasad — sheera or panjiri, made of semolina, ghee, sugar and banana — is prepared as part of the ritual and distributed to everyone present. Accepting it is considered part of the observance, which is the moral of the fifth chapter.
When to hold it
Purnima (full moon) is the classic day, and Kartik and Vaishakh Purnima are especially favoured. But Satyanarayan Puja is deliberately flexible — it can be performed on any day when the family can gather, which is why it suits Mumbai schedules. Evening ceremonies are common and perfectly acceptable. Tell us your date and we will confirm the muhurat window.
What the ceremony needs
- A clean, raised chowki for the deity, with space for the family to sit facing it.
- Banana leaves or a plantain stem for the mandap, traditional but not essential in a flat.
- Ingredients for the sheera prasad — we include this on the samagri list.
- Around two to two and a half hours, including the katha and aarti.
